A 24-year-old man and a 42-year-old woman are facing charges that they beat a woman Friday after an argument about a bag, sending the alleged victim to a local hospital, where she reportedly underwent emergency surgery.

The defendants, Jacob Gene Roubideaux and Mary Lou Whiteman, each made initial court appearances Monday on counts of felony aggravated assault.

Charging documents the two confronted the alleged victim in the area of Lee’s Saloon, 530 S. 27th St., after an earlier fight about a bag Whiteman had been carrying.

During the confrontation, the alleged victim was knocked to the ground, punched and kicked, court records say. The woman suffered severe cuts and her head swelled.

Officers responded and photographed Whiteman, Roubideaux and the alleged victim, who lost unconsciousness, records say. She was taken to a local hospital, where she underwent emergency surgery.

Justice Court Judge David A. Carter set their bonds at $3,500 each and ordered them to appear for arraignment in District Court on Aug. 5.
