Nobody was injured early Friday morning when a Toyota 4-Runner crashed into the BBWA canal at the intersection of Virginia Lane and Poly Drive.

A news release from Billings Police Department Sgt. Shane Winden said that emergency crews responded at about 2 a.m. to a report of a vehicle that had driven into the ditch and was underwater.

When they arrived, police and fire crews weren’t sure if anybody was inside of the Toyota and “began rescue efforts,” Winden said.

Soon after, they learned that nobody was in the vehicle and found its driver and sole occupant, a 22-year-old Billings man, at a nearby residence.

He was cited for careless driving and leaving the scene of an accident.

Winden said that the Toyota was headed westbound on Poly when the driver failed to complete a right turn onto Virginia. The Toyota then crashed through a fence and into the ditch.

“The vehicle was eventually removed using a heavy-duty crane,” Winden said.
