Castle Rock Middle School teacher Todd Nevin was named the Montana Veterans of Foreign Wars Teacher of the Year on Monday, qualifying him to compete for the national award.

Nevin, a geography teacher, was first awarded the regional VFW title for sending care packages to troops overseas and raising money for the Wounded Warrior Project at an all-school assembly last month.

The regional award advanced him to the state contest, which was decided last week. Castle Rock Middle School Principal Shawn Harrington made the announcement Monday.

As the state teacher of the year, Nevin will be in competition for the VFW's national title. The veterans group will hold an awards ceremony in Florida early next year to name the recipient.
