Will James Middle School students took home the top prize for design and engineering during the National Science Bowl held over the weekend in Washington, D.C.

Competing against 47 other schools, the Will James team also placed fifth in the electric car race. Team members Madison Haagenson, Sam Gunnis, Julianne Terry, Tyler Linfesty and Alex Wood built from scratch a shoe-box- sized electric car that they raced.

The car impressed the judges, who awarded the team the top prize in design and engineering.

Before the team traveled to Washington, Apollo astronaut Frank Borman visited Will James to meet with the five students. He signed their car and praised its design.
