Everyone in the summer of 2011 went ga-ga over the Big Sky Little League baseball team, and that included an estimated 4,500 – then Gov. Brian Schweitzer among them – who packed into Dehler on Sept. 3 to honor their baseball heroes.
Earlier that summer, Big Sky made a scintillating run through the Northwest Region and then made it all the way to the U.S. Championship game of the Little League World Series. Big Sky was vanquished in that game, but the 12 players and three coaches were feted throughout the state for their achievement.
The ceremony at Dehler was one of many that summer. “This is crazy,” player Ben Askelson said into a microphone set up at Dehler’s home plate, prompting laughs from the crowd. “It’s pretty amazing, so, thank you.”
