A swimmer died at Spotted Eagle Recreation Area on Monday, according to a release from Justin Russell of the Miles City Fire Department.

The man became fatigued while attempting to swim to an island and then disappeared below the water’s surface.

Miles City police and fire departments; the Custer County Sheriff’s Office; Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; and Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation coordinated a search for the man.

He was found by fire department crews and brought to shore, where medical crews performed CPR. The man was then taken to Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City, where he was pronounced dead.

His name is being withheld pending notification of his family.
