A man in his mid-40s was hospitalized early Thursday after Billings Police found him lying in the street on the city's North Side, bleeding from a substantial head wound.

The man was taken to Billings Clinic with non-life-threatening injuries, Police Lt. Mark Cady said. He was conscious and in the middle of the road when officers found him lying in a pool of blood on 700 block of North 17th Street, according to Sgt. Patrick Curry.

"We found a male lying in the street there with his head split open," Cady said. "They followed the blood trail up to the house and went inside and there were a couple people in there. It looked like (they) had been drinking, a wrestling match got out of hand."

Police are still investigating the incident, but Cady said the three witnesses in the house were intoxicated and uncooperative, as was the injured man. It was unclear how the man had received the head injury or who was responsible for it.

No arrests were made at the scene, and no charges were expected immediately, Cady said.
