A 19-year-old man was taken to St. Vincent Healthcare after he was shot in the upper chest at a private residence in Lockwood Sunday evening, Yellowstone County Sheriff Mike Linder said Monday morning.

Linder declined to release the man's name and details of the investigation, but said the shooting appeared to be accidental. No arrests have been made.

"We're looking at it. The best way to put it is witnesses are indicating it was not intentional," Linder said.

The incident was called in Sunday at 7:51 p.m., according to the Lockwood Fire Department.

Sheriff's deputies obtained a search warrant and found marijuana and alcohol at the house, which is on the 1900 block of Old Hardin Road, Linder said.

"There was evidence that there was alcohol and drugs at the scene, but I couldn't tell you if that had anything to do with it or not," Linder said.

Although one person at the gathering had initially left the scene as deputies arrived, the person later returned, he said. He noted that all of the witnesses cooperated with officers.

The shooting victim was still listed in critical condition as of Monday at 3 a.m., Linder said.
