A 35-year-old man was hospitalized with gunshot wounds to his torso following a shooting on the 900 block of North 19th Street early Monday, according to the Billings Police Department.

The shooter remains at large and his or her identity is still unknown, according to BPD Sgt. Pat Curry. Officers were dispatched to the scene at 1:55 a.m.

"We had an officer nearby who could hear what he thought were four or five rounds that were fired," Curry said.

The victim was conscious and breathing when officers arrived, he added, and appeared to have two gunshot wounds.

Two witnesses at the scene gave conflicting accounts of what happened, Curry added, and no clear description of the suspect was available. The shooting took place near the driveway of a home on the street, but none of those involved appeared to be residents, Curry said.

Officers recovered a handgun at the scene, he added. The victim was transported to St. Vincent Healthcare, according to a press release from the police department.
