A male who drowned at the Spotted Eagle Recreation Area on Monday has been identified as 15-year-old Richard Smith.

Smith became fatigued while attempting to swim to an island and then disappeared below the water’s surface.

The Miles City police and fire departments; the Custer County Sheriff’s Office; Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks; and the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation searched for more than 40 minutes before they found Smith. CPR was unsuccessful.

Smith was pronounced dead at Holy Rosary Healthcare in Miles City.
