North Dakota novelist and poet Larry Woiwode, the High Plains Book Awards emeritus winner, will be honored along with other award winners at a banquet Saturday evening.

Born in Carrington, N.D., Woiwode left the state for college and work before returning in 1978.

He has been the state's poet laureate since 1995.

"He is fascinated by the power of place to shape personal identity," Floyd Skloot wrote in the New York Times.

Among his recent works is "A Step from Death," a memoir. Two other titles published this year are a book of essays, "Words Made Fresh: Essays on Literature and Culture," and a novel, "The Invention of Lefse: A Christmas Story."

The High Plains Book Awards are sponsored by Parmly Billings Library Board of Trustees, Friends of PBL, PBL Foundation, Montana State University Billings, Yellowstone Art Museum and Zonta Club of Billings.
