A fire burned about 300 round hay bales along Montana Highway 87 East on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Lockwood Fire Department.
The fire, burning at mile marker 17.5, was reported at 2:47 p.m.
Firefighters arrived, talked with the landowners and determined that the situation was under control and left after a few minutes, a fireman with the department said.
So much of the hay had burned or been damaged, responders decided there was nothing that could be done to save it.
“Once the smoke gets into those bales, the cows won’t eat it,” a firefighter said.
No injuries were reported. The department did not investigate the cause of the fire.
