Billings Gazette photographer Larry Mayer's second office is the cockpit of a Cessna airplane that he owns and pilots.
Even while flying, Mayer packs a camera and captures unique views high over the Western landscape.
From thousands of feet above the ground, rivers look like serpents, and thermal features like abstract paintings. Man-made features shrink against the backdrop of limitless space.
These aerial photographs were taken across Montana and Yellowstone National Park this year.
