A small fire in an abandoned building behind the downtown Albertsons early Tuesday appeared to have been set by transients, according to the Billings Fire Department.

The fire at 611 North 26th Street was reported at 1:03 a.m. and caused an estimated $1,000 in damage, according to a press release issued by Deputy Fire Marshal Jeff McCullough.

"Looks like they were trying to stay warm," McCullough told The Gazette. "Brutal way of doing it, good way to burn the building down."

The fire never got out of control, Billings Fire Battalion Chief Ed Regele said, and no one was present at the address when firefighters responded.
