A series of wildfires that closed a portion of U.S. Highway 87 north of Billings Thursday evening have been extinguished and traffic flow is back to normal, the Montana Department of Transportation said on Friday morning.

The agency advised travelers to be aware of fire equipment or vehicles that may still be doing mop-up between Billings and Roundup.

At least four separate grass fires over about 15 miles along the east side of the highway started late Thursday afternoon. Officials said a vehicle is suspected to have sparked the fires. Such fires can be caused by dragging chains or flat tires.
