A 41-year-old woman was stabbed early Saturday in downtown Billings, and a suspect is in custody.

Billings police officers arrested Johnny Tillman, 53, of Billings on suspicion of aggravated assault. He was taken to the Yellowstone County Detention Center.

Officers responded to the report of a stabbing just before 3 a.m., said BPD Sgt. Justin Jagers. The woman, a Billings resident, was walking in the alley behind 2301 Montana Ave. when a man approached her from behind and stabbed her three times.

The woman was able to get away from the suspect, and she approached a man and asked him to call 911. She described the suspect to officers while she was being treated by AMR's emergency responders.

The suspect, who was located about a block away, matched the description given by the woman, Jagers said. Officers found additional evidence on Tillman that linked him to the crime.

Police haven't yet found a connection between Tillman and the woman. The victim was taken to Billings Clinic, where she was treated and is listed in stable condition.

The stabbing remains under investigation.
