Yellowstone County commissioners on Tuesday imposed Stage 1 fire restrictions because of recent hot and dry weather conditions.
Stage 1 restrictions prohibit open campfires and stop the issuance of open- burning permits unless exempted for agricultural uses and approved by local fire departments.
Duane Winslow, the county’s disaster and emergency services administrator, urged the county to adopt the restrictions based on recommendations from county fire wardens, rural fire departments and other wildland fire suppression groups.
Hot temperatures and lack of precipitation have caused grasses, vegetation and other light fuels to become extremely dry throughout the county, Winslow said.
Carbon County also is adopting Stage 1 restrictions as well as the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation on state lands, he said.
