In the service

Pvt. Johnathan Pfeiffer completed basic combat training at Fort Jackson, S.C., with the Delta Company 3-34 Infantry in the 165 Infantry Brigade. He is receiving his specialized training at Gulf Port, Miss. He plans on attending college for diesel mechanics and carpentry. He attended Billings West High and graduated from the Montana Youth Challenge Academy and is the son of Jared and Traci Pfeiffer and Misty Eggleston.

U.S. Air National Guard Airman 1st Class Justin R. Turpin graduated from basic military training at Joint Base San Antonio-Lackland, San Antonio, Texas. Turpin is the son of Lynn Turpin of Albuquerque, N.M., and Marie Gauthier, of Billings.

Organizations

The 2014 General Federation of Women’s Club (GFWC) of Montana Biennial Convention was held in Helena. Local members attending included Linda Altwine, Linda Baker, Gayle Carter, Florence Diede, Judy Senteney, Bev Ferguson, Kathy Broyles, Janet Cole, Barbara Hogg, Robin Pittsley and Marsha Price of the GFWC Billings Junior Woman’s Club; Cheryl Martin and Sherry Porter of the GFWC Billings Woman’s Club; Shirley Weisberger of the GFWC Bridger Woman’s Club, and Jean Carol Thompson of the Laurel Federated Woman’s Club.

GFWC of Montana clubs have raised over $13,000 for the Montana Talking Books Library, exceeding the $10,000 goal for updating recording equipment and new Montana-themed book purchases.

GFWC of Montana 2014-2016 officers are Joyce Rogers, president; Joyce Hooper, president-elect; Joyce DeCunzo, first vice-president; Nancy Hanford, treasurer, and Florence Diede, recording secretary. Also appointed to the executive committee for 2014-2016 were Shirley Weisgerber, corresponding secretary; Adina Fox, budget and finance chairman, and Vurnie Kaye Barnett, parliamentary adviser. Roger’s President’s Special Project goal for the coming administration is to raise funds for the purchase of home heart monitors to be used by cardiac patients across Montana. The General Federation of Women's Clubs is an international women’s organization dedicated to community improvement by enhancing the lives of others through volunteer service. The family of Robert J. Murphy was selected for the state award for “Family of the Year” by the Knights of Columbus at the state convention for their service to the community, church and the Knights of Columbus. They were first chosen locally for "Family of the Year” by the Billings Council 8345. The family includes Robert J. and Mary Ellen Murphy and their children Robert J. Murphy, Daniel P. Murphy, John T. Murphy and Carol T. Walker.

In the schools

Makenzie Hintt, of Billings, was awarded the Greek Life Outstanding Community Outreach Award. She is a junior studying elementary education at the University of Montana in Missoula.

Daysi Bellota, Meghan Combs, Jessica Dutton, Rebecca Levandanski and Jennifer Zundel have been awarded $1,500 scholarships by the YWCA Billings 2014 Salute to Student Scholarship programs. The YWCA Salute to Students is an extension of YWCA’s mission to empower women and to create opportunities for women’s growth and leadership. Scholarship donors include L.P. & Teresa Anderson Family Foundation (Marilynn Anderson and Patty Brookman, fund advisers), the Margaret Ping Past YWCA Salute to Women Honoree Endowed Scholarship, Wells Fargo, Sandy R. Wong of Wells Fargo Home Mortgage and the Jessica French Stephenson Memorial Fund.

Hannah Hedtke of Absarokee High ($1,000), Haley Fallang of Absarokee High ($500) and Colton Stampfel of Columbus High ($200) were awarded scholarships by the Stillwater Republican Women. The application consisted of 13 questions and two essay questions on the U. S. Constitution along with a list of civic/community activities.

Carson Lyle Slade, of Billings, and a student at University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), received the UNLV International Programs Scholarship to study abroad in Singapore. The program is committed to providing opportunities for students to see their culture, themselves and others from a new perspective while developing insight into global politics, international economics and planetary environmental preservation efforts which can shape the future.

$1,000 2014 Youth Serve Montana Scholarships have been awarded. Recipients are required to volunteer over 100 hours in the last year and must attend one of Montana Campus Compact’s two-year, four-year, public, tribal, private, or community colleges and universities. Local students earning a scholarship include Jacob Yakawich from Billings Central Catholic High (108 volunteer hours), Wyatt Iverson of Billings Senior High (112), Katherine Bertolino of Joliet High (240), Krishell Herden of Laurel High (120), Quinton Holmlund of Laurel High (235) and Ira Li of Laurel High (264); Kalyn Jensen of Lavina Public School (117.5); Rylee Kane of Red Lodge High (121.5), Kelsey Pratt of Roberts Public School (244) and Courtney Cota of Roundup High (156).

Thomas Knee, of Billings, and a student at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., was recognized for academic achievement at the college's annual Honors Day convocation with a grade point average of 3.60 or higher on a 4.0 scale.
