Trooper memorial. The Association of Montana Troopers has established a memorial fund to benefit the family of Montana Highway Patrol trooper David DeLaittre, who was killed in the line of duty this month near Three Forks. The 23-year-old trooper is the son of a retired MHP trooper and the fifth generation of his family to work in law enforcement. To donate, go online to www.doj.mt.gov or send a check to: David DeLaittre Memorial Fund, First Security Bank, P.O. Box 588, Three Forks, MT 59752.

Stopping dropouts. State Sen. Taylor Brown of Billings has introduced State Superintendent of Public Instruction Denise Juneau's proposal for raising Montana's legal dropout age from 16 to 18. We commend Brown for sponsoring this legislation to remove the legal approval for minors to drop out of high school before graduating or earning a GED.

Snow place. The snow outlook for the start of Yellowstone Park's winter season Wednesday is the best in at least three years. West Yellowstone's Snotel site reported 19 inches of snow accumulated as of late last week. West Yellowstone snow tour operator Randy Roberson reports that reservations for winter visits are very strong.

Urgent care. St. Vincent Healthcare celebrated the completion of a $3.4 million renovation and expansion of its 24/7 walk-in clinic adjoining the hospital emergency department. Along with a new $3 million magnetic resonance imager on site, the project represents a significant investment in top-notch care for the people of this region.

UP

Caring kids. Students in the Friendship House after-school program at Orchard Elementary collected 122 blankets for homeless people. As noted on the Thanksgiving Day opinion page, the children planned and publicized the blanket drive. They decided to give the blankets to Family Service Inc., the Hub and St. Vincent de Paul Society. Congratulations to the students for exceeding their 100-blanket goal.
