Recently, the board of Big Sky Economic Development unanimously endorsed the Yes for Kids initiative to support the three mill levies proposed by the Billings Public School District trustees. The bottom line for Big Sky Economic Development is that our public education system must be top-notch, with high expectations for student achievement, exceptional teachers and a committed, visionary board of trustees and administration.

Meeting this expectation is imperative for the continued economic growth of our community.

“The Communities That Invest in Education Win” is the headline from a recent economic development electronic newsletter that I receive each month, and it is so true. Cities and towns all over the nation working through our tough economic times are competing more than ever with one another for future jobs and growth. It will be those communities that invest in themselves that will be the place where families and talented workers want to live, work and raise their children. It will be those communities that attract new and expanding businesses — creating great job opportunities.

Billings has all the right ingredients to continue to be one of those winning communities. We just need to enhance our investment in our education system and stay focused on other quality of life investments.

While I don’t have a child in School District 2, I personally have a responsibility to support our schools, making a critical investment in our children today and our economic well-being in the future. Please join me in voting Yes for Kids.
