With the announcement of University of Montana President George Dennison’s retirement, I would like to lift up his significant contributions to campus civic engagement and community service in this state.

Dennison is nationally known and respected for his leadership and innovation to ensure that the student experience was well-rounded by involvement in the community, connecting scholarship with service. For many years, he chaired the Montana Commission on Community Service, where he provided leadership and resources to help make Montana’s AmeriCorps programs among the best in the nation. He helped establish and support Montana Campus Compact, Montana Campus Corps and Montana Literacy Corps programs, providing opportunities for students to bring about measurable improvements in their communities while earning scholarship credits. The UM Office of Civic Engagement has enriched the school and the community adding value and meaning for generations of students.

During my service as director of the Governor’s Office of Community Service, I witnessed firsthand the dedication and commitment of Dennison to these efforts. His legacy continues on campuses and communities across the state.
