Brett French's article about the real Hugh Glass (Jan. 17 Gazette) was very interesting. However, I find it difficult to believe the "local history buffs" he spoke to had never even heard of Glass. As a teenager growing up in Iowa, I read about Glass several times. The 1971 movie "Man in the Wilderness" starred Richard Harris playing a character named Zach Bass. It was based on the Glass story and that fact was talked about at the time. I remember seeing it in Billings. Apparently, those local historians aren't particularly well-informed about early mountain men, nor are they movie buffs.
