HELENA — The Montana Democratic Party has scheduled a nominating convention to choose a new U.S. Senate candidate for Aug. 16 in Helena.

The party said the convention will be at the Lewis and Clark County Fairgrounds, 98 W. Custer Ave., beginning at 9 a.m. The doors open at 7:30 a.m. for registration.

Delegates will select a nominee to replace Sen. John Walsh on the November ballot. Walsh announced Thursday he would withdraw as a candidate, saying the controversy over a paper he allegedly plagiarized at the U.S. Army War College was diverting attention from his campaign.

Walsh submitted the official paperwork Friday to Secretary of State Linda McCulloch to withdraw as a candidate. He will serve out the final months of his Senate term, which expires in early January.

About 175 local and state Democratic officials, Democratic statewide elected officials and Democratic legislative leaders will select the Senate nominee. A number of Democrats have expressed interest in running.

The Democratic nominee will face off against Republican Rep. Steve Daines and Libertarian Roger Roots in the November general election.
