BUTTE — An Anaconda-Deer Lodge County commissioner pleaded not guilty Monday to charges accusing him of having sexual contact with a child.

Robert Pierce, 52, was arraigned in Butte district court on felony counts of sexual intercourse without consent and sexual assault. He remains free on $20,000 bond.

He is accused of having sexual contact with a girl in April 2006 and April 2008 in Anaconda when the child was about 8 and 10 years old. Pierce’s attorney, Victor Bunitsky, has said his client denies the accusations and intends to fight them in court.

Pierce’s trial is April 22, but Bunitsky is requesting a continuance. Butte District Judge Brad Newman, who is presiding over the case, will rule on the continuance request at a later date.

U.S. Attorney Dan Guzynski is prosecuting the case.
