People were moving things around inside a car late Tuesday night when one of them accidentally shot a 29-year-old Billings woman in the back at a gas station in Hardin.

Big Horn County Undersheriff William Doyle said that the woman, Michelle Brown of Billings, was with other people in the car around 11 p.m. when she was accidentally shot with a .243 caliber rifle at close range. Doyle said someone else in the car was moving the gun when it discharged and hit Brown in the back. The shooting happened at the Broadway Truck Stop. Brown was taken to Billings Clinic, where she is listed in fair condition.

“Nobody was aiming it, someone was holding it. It was an accident,” Doyle said. “No one’s been arrested and I don’t see that coming at this time.”

Doyle stressed that the shooting seems accidental, but the investigation is ongoing.

“We don’t like to see these things happen, but they do,” he said. “I’m just happy that the woman is still with us and it wasn’t a homicide. It could’ve been worse, but the situation, as we understand it right now, it was an accident.”
