HELENA - The commander of the Montana Air National Guard's 120th Fighter Wing has accepted a position as the commander of the Air National Guard Readiness Center in Washington, D.C.

Col. Mike McDonald will assume his new duties in August, according to Maj. Rick Anderson, spokesman for the state's Air Guard.

McDonald had served as the 120th's wing commander since June 2007.

"Col. McDonald's replacement has not yet been selected," Anderson said.

"There will be a formal application and interview process for the top wing-leadership position."

As wing commander, McDonald oversaw 900 personnel while ensuring the unit met its flying and training missions.

He was responsible for aircraft and assets valued at more than $750 million, much of it based in Great Falls.

McDonald received his bachelor of science degree from the Air Force Academy in 1978. He attended F-16 basic training in 1980 and, over the years, has logged more than 4,400 hours in the F-16.

As has the Montana Army Guard over the past year, the Air Guard is now seeing a change in leadership.

The shifting of power within the Air Guard began in May with the removal of Brig. Gen. John Del Toro

for an unprofessional

relationship with a subordinate.

His replacement, Brig. Gen. Bradley Livingston, was announced two weeks ago.

Anderson said McDonald's replacement will be announced after the selection process plays out.

"A formal change of command will take place with the outgoing and incoming leader," Anderson said.
