BOZEMAN — A Bozeman man charged with trying to rape a former girlfriend in February and escaping police custody for three weeks has pleaded not guilty to possessing a drug that may have been used to knock the woman out.

Prosecutors say a syringe found in Kevin Anthony Briggs' backpack had traces of the drug etizolam, which has sedative effects. The drug also was found in body fluid samples taken from the woman Briggs is charged with assaulting and trying to rape.

Briggs pleaded not guilty Monday to criminal possession of dangerous drugs. He has denied six felony charges and remains jailed in lieu of a $1.25 million bond.

Prosecutors allege Briggs assaulted a police officer who tried to arrest him, escaped from a police interview room and didn't register as a sex offender during the time he was on the run.
