BISMARCK, N.D. — Mandan police say a Bismarck man agreed to pay a cab driver $1,200 to drive him to Mandan from Sacramento, Calif., then refused to hand over cash.

The Bismarck man, 25, was arrested on a Burleigh County warrant but has not been charged yet for the cab incident.

A Sacramento man called police on Friday and reported that the Bismarck man had asked the driver to take him to Mandan from Sacramento.

The two men agreed on $1,200, and the Bismarck man provided a down payment.

According to a statement from the Mandan Police Department, the cab driver said his passenger did not have the remaining money when they got to Mandan, so he tried to contact someone for the fare. When the cab driver became upset about not being paid, the Bismarck man allegedly pulled out a knife and threatened to kill himself. Then he told the driver he was diabetic and in need of food, so the cab driver took him to a grocery store. While the Bismarck man was inside, the cab driver called police.

When police spoke to the Bismarck man, he denied threatening to harm himself. Officers arrested him on a warrant for failing to pay fines on a driving under suspension conviction out of Burleigh County and turned him over to the Burleigh County Sheriff’s Department.

The Morton County State’s Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file charges over the alleged nonpayment of the cab fare.
