HELENA — Helena police cited four people, including a 16-year-old, in connection with a suspected attempt to steal fuel from a truck early Sunday.
Helena Police Chief Troy McGee said officers had been keeping an eye on the area around Lyndale Avenue and Ewing Street because of recent fuel thefts from vehicles.
About 1:15 a.m., a patrol officer saw a vehicle parked near a Coca-Cola delivery truck. When he approached, he smelled a strong odor of gasoline, McGee said.
One person ran off, but was quickly caught by another officer, and three stayed by the truck.
Police found siphoning hoses and other equipment for stealing fuel near the truck.
Holly Marie Boettcher, 18, of East Helena, Jesse Dylan Carroll, 20, of Elliston, and Michael Wayne Walth, 21, of Clancy, were all cited for theft and endangering the welfare of a child. Both charges are misdemeanors. The endangerment charge arose because they had a 16-year-old with them, McGee theft. The youth was cited for theft.
Carroll was also arrested on suspicion of violating probation.
