SHELBY -- Flathead County officials have released the name of a man who was killed in a weekend avalanche near Marias Pass.

Sheriff Chuck Curry said the victim was 23-year-old Francis Skierka of Cut Bank.

Curry says Skierka and a fellow rider triggered the avalanche on Saturday while riding snowbikes. The other rider suffered minor injuries. Curry did not release his name. Skierka's body was recovered on Saturday afternoon.

Skierka's was the third avalanche death in Montana in six days. A snowmobiler from Washington state died in an avalanche east of Kalispell on Feb. 20, and a Canadian snowmobiler died in an avalanche near Daisy Pass north of Cooke City on Feb. 22.
