The old Smurfit-Stone Container Corp. mill site has been officially renamed.

The site’s owners, Green Investment Group Inc., announced in a news release Wednesday it will be called the Frenchtown Technology and Industrial Center.

The new name better describes the site and will help as Green Investment Group representatives market it to potential tenants, the release said.

The company wants to market the site to “industrial manufacturers, specifically companies in oil field and oil equipment manufacturing, technology and chemical/biomass manufacturing operations, and emerging technology enterprises poised for commercialization.”

Green Investment Group bought the site in 2011 and has been working since to repurpose it for development. Crews recently demolished several large buildings on the site.

The release said roughly 40 local workers were hired during the cleanup process.

The site still includes more than 1 million square feet of building infrastructure suitable for warehouse, office, manufacturing and maintenance operations, the release said.

While no tenants have signed a lease at the site yet, Green Investment Group has “entertained interest from several prospects who believe the property has potential for their business expansion or relocation,” the release said.

“We are looking for the right fit and we believe one of the next steps in finding the right prospect is in developing the brand and announcing the many assets and infrastructure already in place for companies looking to expand or relocate their operation,” Green Investment Group co-founder Ray Stillwell said in the release.

Green Investment Group announced in late December it would move ahead with redevelopment plans even though government officials have recommended it for Superfund priority listing.
