  • Population: Approximately 1,200. County seat of Jefferson County. One of seven cities that sought to become the state capital after Montana achieved statehood in 1889.

    Elevation: 4,991 feet.

  • Its hot springs, “health mines” and institutions and facilities that work with people with mental and physical disabilities, drug addictions and criminal behavior.

  • The large boulders found in the region that are part of the Boulder Batholith, which originated 74 to 81 million years ago when molten magma rose through the earth’s crust. When it reached the surface it created violent explosions that hurled chunks of rock, cinders and volcanic ash into the air.

  • Boulder Hot Springs Inn and Spa, the Jefferson County Courthouse, the Montana Deaf and Dumb Asylum.

  • Actor Patrick Duffy, best-known for his role as Bobby Ewing on the long-running TV hit “Dallas,” spent part of his childhood here. Duffy is a native of Townsend.

    Duffy's parents were murdered in Boulder in November 1986.
