A Glendive man recently admitted to federal charges that he had child pornography on his computer.

Shawn Michael Wentz, 28, pleaded guilty to possession of child porn during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Billings on Oct. 5. A plea agreement calls for an original charge of receipt of child porn to be dismissed at sentencing if the judge accepts the deal.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyndee Peterson said in court records that Wentz came to the attention of agents with the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task force in May 2015. Agents learned that a computer at Wentz’s residence had child porn files available for downloading, she said.

In June 2016, agents served a search warrant at Wentz’s residence and seized a desktop computer. An analysis of the computer found it contained child porn images and videos, including images of prepubescent children. The examiner also found that files had been downloaded through a peer-to-peer network and had been viewed, she said.

Wentz faces a maximum 20 years in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Susan Watters set sentencing for Jan. 25. Wentz is in custody.
