HAVRE — Nine losing candidates in the primary election for Rocky Boy Indian Reservation's Tribal council have filed a lawsuit to overturn the primary results and stop Tuesday's general election.
The group in the suit filed Thursday contends the Rocky Boy election committee failed to properly conduct background checks as required by the Chippewa Cree Tribe and eliminate unqualified candidates.
The group is requesting a new election be scheduled.
Stacey Small tells the Havre Daily News that one of the candidates who did advance should have been eliminated because of a felony conviction.
But the election board says the individual's record was checked and the charge had been dismissed, making the candidate eligible to run.
