HELENA — The Montana Army National Guard is holding a ceremony in appreciation of 59 soldiers who served in Afghanistan and their families.

Guard officials say the Freedom Salute Ceremony will be held at 1 p.m. Sunday in Helena's Great Northern Town Center Best Western hotel.

The Helena-based soldiers are part of a heavy lift aviation unit with CH-47 Chinook helicopters and ground support. The unit supported an infantry division in Kandahar and the 82nd Airborne at Forward Operating Base Shank.

They were deployed for 12 months, nine of those in Afghanistan, where they transported Special Operations Teams, heavy cargo and maintenance support.
