Derrick Drivdahl, 50, of Helena has been arraigned on charges of receipt and distribution of child pornography.

He made his initial appearance on Dec. 31 in U.S. District Court in Great Falls and entered a plea of not guilty.

According to a grand jury indictment, from March 20, 2010, through July 15, 2013, Drvidahl received child pornography over the Internet, and distributed it from Feb. 1, 2013, to June 4, 2013.

Drivdahl is a former custodian at Four Georgians Elementary School, and was arrested in July on child pornography charges stemming out of the same incidents. He was charged in state court with one count of sex abuse of children, which carries up to a $10,000 fine and up to 100 years in prison.

That charge was dismissed last month in order for the case to be moved to federal court.

School officials have said they don’t believe any of the activity was conducted on school property, and no students were involved.

Drivdahl’s alleged activities were discovered by the Montana Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force through a “cybertip,” according to police reports. Those types of tips involve suspicious Internet activity and are passed to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, which notified the Montana task force. The tips said Drivdahl was using the Internet to receive, possess and distribute the visual images of children under 18.

A telephonic preliminary pretrial conference is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 15 before Judge Dana Christensen in Missoula.
