HELENA - The two-year campaign for Montana governor followed a well-worn trail until its final days, when it veered into the courtroom.

Only after Tuesday's vote will it be known if the dispute over a $500,000 donation to Republican candidate Rick Hill made any difference in his race against Democrat Steve Bullock.

The contribution came after a federal judge tossed Montana's campaign contribution limits - but before an appeals court reinstated them. Hill says the donation was legal. Bullock says he must give it back. A judge blocked Hill from spending the money.

Hill campaign manager Brock Lowrance says Bullock's lawsuit only energized Hill's supporters.

Bullock campaign manager Kevin O'Brien says the dispute underlines the differences between the two candidates.
