HELENA — The Montana House has endorsed a plan to allow firearms on college campuses, but rejected a plan allowing concealed guns in other places like bars.

Representatives voted Friday 56-44 to allow students to keep guns on college campuses.

Supporters say House Bill 240 upholds constitutional rights and lets students defend themselves.

The bill must pass a final House vote before moving to the Senate.

The House voted down a separate measure that would have allowed individuals with a permit to carry concealed firearms in government buildings, banks and bars, all currently restricted locations.

Supporters say it would not have prevented businesses owners from having their own ban.

Lawmakers opposing the bill cited safety concerns for public employees and bar patrons.

House Bill 358 failed 48-52.
