BUTTE — A hiker in the Welcome Creek Wilderness found human remains over the weekend.

Granite County Sheriff Scott Dunkerson said a crew including deputies, search and rescue members and a medical examiner from the state crime lab trekked to the site Sunday afternoon to gather the “older” remains for testing. A backpacker from Missoula found the remains Saturday then led the group in the next day, Dunkerson said.

The medical examiner took the remains back to the lab for analysis.

Dunkerson said he does not if it was a male or female, or any other details on the identity of the person.

The group first went to the site Saturday then returned to the scene in the daylight Sunday to further investigate. The body was found about 15 miles south of the Rock Creek exit on Interstate 90.

“It’s pretty rugged terrain,” he added.

Dunkerson said he will release further details as they come available.
