Two people were killed and a 3-year-old child was critically injured in a head-on crash on Friday afternoon south of Garryowen on I-90's frontage road.

Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Eric Winburn said the crash happened at about 4:45 p.m. on Secondary Highway 451.

A woman in a passenger car was driving south about halfway between Garryowen and Lodge Grass.

The investigation indicated she was behind another vehicle and kept pulling out of her lane looking to pass, Winburn said.

As she pulled out to pass, she saw an oncoming car, braked and unsuccessfully tried to return to the lane, Winburn said.

A passenger vehicle headed north collided with the woman’s car, he said.

The woman died at the scene.

The man driving the northbound car was taken by helicopter to a Billings hospital, where he died.

A child who was a passenger in the woman’s car was ejected. The child is hospitalized in critical condition, Winburn said.

Names of the victims have not been released pending notification of relatives, Winburn said.
