BUTTE — Residents peering up at Our Lady of the Rockies on Wednesday night were seeing red.

It was not a repeat of the blood moon.

Practical jokers scaled the hill and covered the Lady’s floodlights with red cellophane, police said. But, the pranksters were polite and removed the coverings before making their way down the hillside, where officers awaited.

Police received reports at about 10:30 p.m. regarding the Lady in red. They watched the four culprits make their way down the hill guided by flashlights.

When police saw the Lady had regained her normal hue of white and the pranksters were toting the cellophane, they opted to get the foursome’s information but not pursue charges.

Authorities were not sure how long the Lady, the 90-foot statue overlooking Butte, glowed red.

“I assume it’s on Facebook somewhere,” Undersheriff George Skuletich said.
