HELENA — Wildlife officials have captured a pair of black bear cubs that were orphaned when their mother was hit and killed by a vehicle outside of Lincoln.

Authorities responded to Tuesday’s crash on Montana Highway 200 after receiving a report just before 5 p.m. The driver of the vehicle was not injured.

The cubs were found Wednesday near Rogers Pass.

“We located their den and found both cubs in it,” said Fish, Wildlife and Parks Game Warden Brady Murphy.

The cubs weighed about five pounds each and will be taken to FWP’s wildlife center in Helena.

“The cubs are young,” Murphy said. “They were born just a couple months ago.”
