HELENA — An 80-year-old Helena man sustained minor injuries when his airplane crashed on landing in the Helena Valley, ending up on its top.

The crash occurred shortly before 9 a.m. on Saturday morning near the junction of Lincoln Road and Green Meadow Drive on a private airstrip. The plane was flown by licensed pilot Jerry Maykuth, who was the only occupant in the plane, said Sheriff Leo Dutton.

The plane is a Savannah VGW, a two-seat fixed-wing single-engine aircraft, Dutton said.

Authorities have not yet investigated the cause of the crash. The investigation will be conducted by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.

Maykuth suffered minor injuries in the crash. Medical personnel evaluated and treated him at the scene, but he declined transportation to the hospital, Dutton said.
