BUTTE — Law enforcement officers in Butte are searching for a California man they suspect shot a Butte man in the leg.

Butte-Silver Bow Undersheriff George Skuletich says officers received a report of possible shots fired at 12:15 a.m. Friday. The 38-year-old victim had a gunshot wound to his calf and drove himself to the hospital.

Sheriff Ed Lester says 37-year-old Luke Andrew Lapinski, of Buellton, Calif., is the subject of a nationwide search, and officers are working on getting a warrant charging him with attempted deliberate homicide. The victim was an acquaintance of Lapinski.

Lester said Lapinski was sitting in a silver 2013 Chevrolet Corvette when he fired two shots from a handgun. One hit the Butte man in the leg.

Lester says the victim's injuries are not life-threatening. He declined to comment on a possible motive.
