HELENA — The Gazette State Poll was conducted Sept. 17-19 by Mason-Dixon Polling & Research Inc. of Washington, D.C., for the Billings Gazette, Montana Standard of Butte, Helena Independent Record, Missoulian and Ravalli Republic.
A total of 625 registered voters were interviewed statewide by telephone. All said they were likely to vote in the November election.
The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus four percentage points. The margin of error is higher for any subgroup such as a region or gender sampling.
Pollsters interviewed 313 women, or 50 percent of the sample, and 312 men or 50 percent.
They interviewed 226 people who identified themselves as Republicans or 36 percent of the sample; 214 people who said they were Democrats or 34 percent of the sample; and 185 people, or 30 percent, who called themselves independents.
Those interviewed were randomly selected from a phone-matched Montana voter registration list that included both land-line and cell phone numbers. Quotas were assigned to reflect voter turnout by county.
