Federal mine safety officials say a central Montana coal mine with a history of safety violations received multiple citations during a recent round of inspections.
Signal Peak Energy's Bull Mountain Mine south of Roundup received eight citations and orders during inspections last month. Bull Mountain was targeted in a program aimed at troubled mines that began after 29 workers died in West Virginia's Upper Big Branch Mine explosion in 2010.
Safety violations found at Bull Mountain ranged from fire and explosion hazards due to broken or damaged equipment, to low oxygen levels in the mine and a lack of warning signs around flammable equipment.
In three instances, Signal Peak was found to have acted with a high degree of negligence because it allegedly knew of problems and failed to act.
