A weekend crash claimed the lives of a Hellgate Elementary School teacher and a student at Florence-Carlton Elementary School, the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Hannah Capen, 23, and Meghan Okon, 9, died as a result of the crash on U.S. Highway 93 south of Lolo.

The Montana Highway Patrol said Capen lost control of her Ford pickup truck and crossed the centerline, hitting a northbound sport utility vehicle head on.

Okon, her mother and a sibling were riding in the SUV, Missoula County sheriff’s public information officer Paige Pavalone said. All three were taken to a Missoula hospital with serious injuries; Okon died Sunday.

Capen’s husband was a passenger in the truck, and was injured in the crash as well. Capen was pronounced dead at the scene.

Pavalone said Capen was a teacher at Hellgate Elementary and Okon attended Florence-Carlton Elementary School.

The accident resulted in a four-hour closure of Highway 93 just south of Lolo, near Trader Brothers, on Saturday evening. The highway was snowy and slick at the time of the 5:30 p.m. crash.
