CANYON, Texas — The Texas prosecutor who brokered a 10-year probationary sentence for former NFL quarterback Ryan Leaf has set a deadline for paperwork to be completed on a plea deal that would allow the Montana native to serve his sentence in his home state.

Randall County District Attorney James Farren sent letters Tuesday to Leaf's attorneys in Texas and Montana, telling them he will start extradition proceedings to try Leaf in Texas on probation violations if the paperwork isn't completed by July 8.

Farren wants Leaf to serve a seven-year sentence in Montana, which would save Texas money. Leaf violated his probation last year when he was arrested for drug possession in Montana.

Leaf's Texas attorney, Bill Kelly, declined to comment. His Montana attorney didn't immediately return a call.
