MISSOULA — The University of Montana and Missoula police issued a campuswide alert Wednesday afternoon for Kevin Briggs, a suspect in an assault and rape in Bozeman.

Briggs escaped custody of the Bozeman police and might be in Missoula, according to the alert.

"UM and Missoula law enforcement ask you to be on the lookout for him," the alert said.

Briggs is described as 28 years old, 5 feet 5 inches tall, medium build, 150 pounds, brown hair, blue eyes.

Bozeman police say Briggs also has gone by these names: Amiee Macintire, James Zenon Meismer.

Briggs was reported to have been on probation, having previously been convicted for kidnapping and raping a girl in Helena in early 2003, and convicted of escape in Lewis and Clark County in 2003 and in Powell County in 2004.

He was in custody in Bozeman in another rape and assault case when he escaped from the Gallatin County Courthouse.

According to Missoula Police Sgt. Travis Welsh, "The Missoula Police Department is currently investigating the possibility that Bozeman escapee Kevin Briggs may have been in the Missoula area this past weekend. We are asking that if anyone observes a subject they believe to be Briggs, please call 9-1-1; do not attempt to approach him or contact him, but rather maintain sight of him while conveying information to the emergency operator."

Call 911 if you have information about him.
