A 42-year-old Townsend woman died and a 4-year-old child was injured in a rollover crash east of Townsend on Sunday.

According to the Montana Highway Patrol, the woman, whose name has not been released, was driving a Chevrolet Suburban eastbound on Highway 12 when, about four miles east of Townsend, it drifted off the south side of the road just before 3:30 p.m.

The Suburban rolled down an embankment and landed on its top. The woman, who wasn't wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the SUV as it rolled and died at the scene, the patrol said.

A 4-year-old boy who was in a child seat in the Suburban was injured in the crash.

The Montana Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
